NK Summer Learning Programs

During the 10-week Summer Recess most students will lose up to three months of skills.  This is the Summer Slide and the North Kingstown School Department is eager to help kids and families avoid it!  Learn below about opportunities run through the School Department and other locations around North Kingstown.  Staying active, reading, and engaged during the summer will make for a smooth transition in the fall.  And the right programs are a fun way to stay mentally fit this summer!

North Kingstown School Department Programs

  • Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) -This is an invitation only program for students in grades K-5 that receive Tier 3 services through the MTSS framework. The students focus on maintaining foundational reading, writing and math skills in this 4 week program that runs 3 hours a day for the month of July, Monday-Thursday.  


  • Extended School Year (ESY) - ESY Services are designed to provide educational programming beyond the traditional 180-day school year for eligible students with disabilities, as outlined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Based on the educational needs noted by the child’s IEP Team, and the ESY eligibility criteria, students can be found eligible to attend this program. 


  • Summer Squad - Summer Squad is a free program that offers a unique summer camp experience that is both recreational and educational.  Certified North Kingstown teachers facilitate fun, hands-on enrichment activities that mitigate summer learning loss for students in grades 1 through 6.  Fun and interactive hands-on activities with skilled instructors make for an exciting program for participating students.  Interested?  Fill out an interest form HERE.

Other North Kingstown Based Programs 

  1. Playground Camp - run by the NK Rec Department, this program offers kids with plenty of free time to explore what makes North Kingstown parks so great!  For Summer 2025, certified teachers will join each camp location, once a week for five-weeks to facilitate fun hands-on learning activities.  Spaces fill up fast!  Register online HERE.

  2. Camp Grosvenor - part of the Boys and Girls Club Camp Grosvenor in Saunderstown.  Build your child’s confidence and explore nature at Camp Grosvenor - hiking, high ropes, swimming, archery and more!  More information HERE.

  3. RI Computer Museum - learn all about coding in this hand-on week-long camp at the RI Computer Museum.  More information HERE.

  4. Casey Farm - get outdoors and learn about nature, games, and farming practices from the last century.  Programs for kids ages 4-12.  More information HERE
